Margaret Maron always keeps me involved in both the characters and the story lines in her novels. While there is some violence, it is not graphic, and the sexual content is implied rather than described. In one sense DESIGNATED DAUGHTERS may be a slight departure in that this mystery focuses a great deal on those who care for the elderly. It should join the list of favorites for Maron fans.
I've followed her Deborah Knott series from the beginning and am always eager to read the latest news about her family. The characters are so well drawn that they might be standing in my living room chatting and laughing. In this case, however, the entire clan has gathered in the hospital to visit her Aunt Rachel. Aunt Rachel wakes up and begins talking, and someone gets nervous about what she might reveal. A short time later Aunt Rachel is discovered dead in her hospital bed. Given the size of the Knott family, it takes a while before Deborah learns just who was responsible for her death. Read on to discover the family secret that Aunt Rachel revealed ...
Maron always writes good mysteries, but her characters the most engaging part of her books. First of all, Judge Knott and her husband are a middle-aged couple who absolutely adore each other and their kids. That's refreshing, in and of itself. Then, Deborah Knott's extended family members are a hoot and always keep things lively. In this particular case, Maron also had me guessing "whodunit" until the very end. I always hate to finish one of her books...unless I have another one waiting to be read.
Who murdered Aunt Rachel? What words did she speak that caused someone to kill her? How did her Uncle die? Is there a connection? That’s what Dwight and Deborah set out to find in this character-driven drama that I could not put down until it was over. I love the comfortable tone and the way the book pulls me into the storyline, as I’m right there with the Knott clan. The mystery was good with plenty of suspects, who could have done the deed, and it was fun watching it all play out with secrets exposed and especially with the revelation of the killer’s identity. Boasting a great cast ensemble with engaging dialogue and the feel of good old-southern hospitality, this well-written drama is one of the best yet in this terrific series and I look forward to spending more time with Deborah Knott and her family and friends in their next adventures.
A wonderful book by one of my favorite authors. The Deborah Knott books by Margaret Maron are lighthearted mysteries about a woman judge in rural North Carolina. In this book Deborah's very elderly Aunt passes away under unusual circumstances. It is Deborah's role to find out what happened.
The best part of these books is the quirky cast of characters. The main character, Deborah, is the youngest of 12 children and is the ONLY girl. Her father was a farmer and bootlegger and is rumored to still finance some stills in the area. Judge Knott is part Judge, part mystery solver, and always independent woman. I love reading about this patchwork crazy quilt of family.
I completely recommend this book but be sure to start with the first book in the series "The Bootlegger's Daughter"
I began reading Margaret with "The Bootleggers Daughter" after newly relocating to North Carolina. I asked a librarian who would be a good author to get a balanced and entertaining look at my new state, she recommended Margaret Maron. I have read everything she has written since then. Life changed and we returned to CA, but even here, a few pages in, the beauty of springtime and the scent of Magnolia's return me to all of the pleasures, and some of the less than, that we experienced there. Deborah has almost become a cousin, we so approved of her choice in mates. We follow their adventures, knowing they will survive, but searching out the "bad guys or gals" as quickly as possible. A delightful entertaining read, Designated Daughters, slipping in a look at a community problem without preaching, no small southern feat.
I always look forward to the next installment of Margaret Maron's folksy Judge Knott whodunnits. As a Tar Heel born and bred myself, though I'm from a different part of the state from where the Deborah Knott mysteries are set, I enjoy Maron's sketches of North Carolina life and the many homey little tidbits about the Knott family.
I think this is one of the better books in the series, with an interesting concept involving the unexpected ramblings of an elderly woman, a fairly intricate story line trotted out with a lot of red herrings. Of course it's all served up the usual side dishes involving Deborah's husband, adopted son and large, colorful family.
Unrelated to the main story line, there's a satisfying though expected resolution to the problems of a family friend. However, the resolutions to the main mystery, and there is more than one mystery, aren't too convincing. Still, Designated Daughters is a fun read, and I recommend it to anyone who likes an easy-going, Southern-style mystery with appealing characters and without much blood and gore.
