Shrouded Secrets Joel T McGrath 9781453791929 Books Reviews

The fact that I really liked Shrouded Secrets by Joel T. McGrath was a complete surprise to me. I am not a "sci-fi" fan, per say. However, the multi-faceted characters of teenage siblings David and Danielle James was the hook for me and kept me eagerly turning pages right up to the end. The author has a great imagination for the supernatural, yet the book stays grounded in the present with the "real-life" teenage angst and volatility of these very likable siblings. The peaceful setting of their grandfather's home in rural New Hampshire was the perfect spot for the launch of their fantastic adventure. There was enough suspense and action to satisfy any reader. The ending was complete, yet the door is ajar for a sequel. Well Done!
This is an intriguing story with enough unpredictablility to inspire wanting to know the outcome. But who edited this novel? I'm OK with misuse of words and grammar in dialogue, but misusing words by definition and pronouns in the narrative text is a no-no. Swords made of "steal?" In the last 10 years I've not read a book with so many blatant errors. The story has some well developed plot details in spite of the event flow being somewhat contrived. I think it could have used one more re-write.
Let me preface this review by saying I read almost constantly, and across several genres. I read everything from Sci-Fi and Fantasy to young adult fiction and even throw in a few cheesy romance novels from time to time. I very seldom choose not to finish a book I've started. Although I've finished 40% of this book, the jury is still out.

I like the idea for the story, and I think the author has potential. He can certainly create an interesting world and has a good imagination. The problem I'm having is with writing style and characterization. Similes and Metaphors and other descriptive language are important to help build the background imagery for the plot and characters, but using them constantly can be distracting and eventually annoying. Some of the flashbacks that are intended to build background interrupt the flow of the story. At other times the world view being portrayed highlights just how young the author is.

One of the characters is a young man from another planet. His voice is muddled. When he visits the Earth, he sounds relatively normal other than not always understanding slang references, but when the other two main characters visit his home planet, all of a sudden he sounds like Data from Star Trek. He can't put a sentence together without it sounding stilted and mechanical.

Maybe I'm being picky. Steven R. Donaldson's first book The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever had problems with writing style in the first few chapters, but the story and characters were so compelling I didn't notice the problems until the second or third time I read the series. Then there was Christopher Paolini who wrote Eragon. He was also very young, but you didn't see that youth or naiveté reflected in his characters or in a simplistic vision for the world he created. I feel this author just needs a little time to gain more life experience and help tightening up the story to make it a really good read. All in all, I think I'll probably finish Shrouded Secrets, but I probably won't read it again in a few years.
The story started out alright but it got worse with each chapter. The sci-fi parts were definitely amateur at best. The story itself mimicked the bible in so many ways it was somewhat insulting. And kids aged 14 and 16 do not speak in such mature ways nor do they think as maturely as they were portrayed. Their vocabulary was far beyond their years most kids that age don't even know how to spell those words let alone know what they mean. The love story was weak and gushy, too quick and forced which made it feel like it didn't even belong there. It should have been omitted altogether. I will avoid this author in the future and do not recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable read.
